skiff beat me to it..

since today is halloween and all.. i thought it would be fitting to list my favorite horror movies. they’re not really in any order..
1. near dark (1987)
along with the lost boys this is definitely my favorite vampire movie. if vampires were real i think they would be a lot like they are in this movie. but i think i can speak for most horror fans when i say im so sick of this vampire trend.
2. return of the living dead (1985)
zombies.. comedy.. punk rock.. how could i not love this movie? definitely the perfect balance for my taste. all though it’s become such a cult film it just never gets old. never a boring moment.
3. creepshow (1982)
i am a sucker for anthology films, and this one is the godfather of horror anthologies. as a kid, i remember flipping though the channels after saturday morning cartoons and getting sucked into this movie. this is one of my top 5 favorite movies without a doubt. the best stories are ”something to tide you over” and “the crate”.
4. frankenstein (1931)
over the years i’ve become obsessed with anything frankenstein and this movie is just a down right classic in american cinema. i wish i could have seen the look on people’s faces when this first came out in the 30’s.
5. the strangers (2008)
we all know that horror movies have pretty much gone down hill the last decade or two. but all of us have a few that stand out to us for some reason. for me it was the strangers. it’s a movie that has such a great build up and the use of sounds/silence are incredible. although i don’t think most people liked this movie, it definitely played on things i love about a good scary movie. i had the same feelings watching this as i did watching halloween as a kid.
6. evil dead 2 (1987)
up until a few years ago i didn’t realize how popular this movie was. i just always looked at it as a fun low budget underground film. but i guess there’s a reason why it has such a cult following. it’s just such a wacky entertaining flick. the whole trilogy is awesome but like most, this is my favorite.
7. dawn of the dead (1978)
i love just about any movie that takes place in a mall. although most of the romero dead movies are great, I like this one the most because of the mall setting. it’s where i’d want to be if i was hiding from zombies. the remake is also good.
8. texas chainsaw massacre (1974)
it’s funny to me that this movie is looked at as sooo gory and bloody but in all actuality you never really see much of anything. which everyone knows your imagination creates much worse things than they could ever show on screen. i wish more movies would play on that. but this movie has always creeped me out with the terrifying screams and the gritty “snuff film” look to it.
9. friday the 13th part VI (1986)
i couldn’t mention my favorite horror movies without mentioning a jason film. although i like most of them, this one is my favorite. there’s not much to it, just jason being jason with a little bit of comedy thrown in the mix. this was also filmed about an hour from where i live, which i visited recently.
10. sleepaway camp (1983)
while friday the 13th is the king of camp movies and the burning comes in a close second, i’ve always personally loved this one. through out most of the movie it’s just a funny cheesy slasher film, but the last minute or two totally creeped me out. i remember laying in bed with that last visual in my head and that sound. for some reason the way they did it really disturbed me.
